Can a mother’s bounty be metered?
A life-sized sculpture of a Holstein cow features an industrial steel manifold with brass valves in place of its natural udder.
What you see
A life-sized Holstein cow stands on a low white plinth inside a sterile art gallery. Where the animal's organic udder should hang, a polished stainless steel vessel merges seamlessly into the hide, terminating in a horizontal manifold equipped with four heavy brass ball valves.
The piece fuses the biological warmth of livestock with the cold rigidity of factory plumbing. A cow traditionally represents maternal care, rustic peace, and unmetered natural abundance. In stark contrast, the industrial manifold introduces mechanical regulation, calculated quotas, and dehumanizing commerce.
By replacing living tissue with manual shutoff levers, the hybrid object examines the systematic exploitation of living bodies, transforming the maternal act of nursing into a strictly metered fluid-delivery mechanism.
